Choosing the right tubular latch is essential to ensure the smooth operation of your doors. A tubular latch is a type of door latch that is commonly used for internal doors, such as bedroom doors. It consists of a cylindrical housing that contains a latch mechanism. When the door is closed, the latch mechanism extends into the door frame, keeping the door securely shut. When the door handle is turned, the latch retracts, allowing the door to open.
Here’s a guide to help you choose the right tubular latch:
1. Size: Tubular latches come in various sizes to fit different door sizes. Standard sizes include 63mm (2.5 inches), 75mm (3 inches), and 100mm (4 inches). These are the measurement of the overall size of the latch body. Ensure that the latch you choose matches the thickness of your door by choosing the correct Backset in the next step.
2. Backset: The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the borehole (the hole where the lever is installed). This is commonly measured as the distance from the edge of the door to the middle of the door style, meaning the door handle rose will sit centrally within the style. Common backset sizes are 44mm (1.75 inches) and 57mm (2.25 inches). Measure the correct backset of your door (edge of door to centre of style) to select a latch with a corresponding backset measurement. The larger sizes of latch are usually used for Door Knob furniture. We would usually recommend using the 4” Tubular Latch or larger for a door knob, but the 3” can be used as an absolute minimum. This means the door knob will be sufficiently away from the door frame to allow easy and comfortable use for the users hand.
3. Functionality: Consider the intended use of the door when selecting a tubular latch. For example, if it’s for a bathroom or bedroom door, you might want a latch with a privacy function that can be locked from the inside. Alternatively, for a closet or pantry door, a basic latch without a lock mechanism may be sufficient.
4. Quality and Durability: Look for tubular latches made from high-quality materials like brass or stainless steel. These materials provide durability and longevity, ensuring the latch can withstand frequent use. Check customer reviews or ask for recommendations to ensure you select a reliable brand or model.
5. Finish: Consider the aesthetic appeal of the latch and how it complements your door hardware. Tubular latches are available in various finishes, such as polished brass, satin nickel, or antique bronze. Choose a finish that matches or complements your door handles, hinges, and overall décor.
6. Security: If security is a concern, you may want to consider a tubular latch with additional features like anti-thrust functionality. This prevents the latch from being pushed back with excessive force or manipulation from the outside.
7. Ease of Installation: Ensure that the tubular latch you choose is easy to install or comes with clear installation instructions. Some latches may require specific tools or skills for installation, so check if you have the necessary resources or consult a professional if needed.
By considering these factors, you can select the right tubular latch that fits your door, offers the desired functionality, and enhances the overall aesthetics of your space. View the Atlantic range of latches below.
